West Coast Giants: Breeders in California, Washington & Oregon#
The West Coast “Vibe” extends to its cat fancy. While the East Coast is formal and traditional, the West Coast Maine Coon scene is diverse, experimental, and heavily focused on Polydactyls (extra toes).
Historically, “Hemingway Cats” (Polydactyls) were common on ships sailing from Boston to San Francisco. Today, the West Coast has some of the best Polydactyl breeding programs in the world.
The Polydactyl Specialist Region#
If you want a cat with “mittens” (6 or 7 toes), look to Washington and Oregon. Why? The TICA breed standard (which is popular in the West) accepted Polydactyls for championship status before CFA did. West Coast breeders have been refining the “Poly” look for decades.
Top Ethical Catteries (Vetted History)#
- Whatatrill (California): World-famous. Producing TICA International Winners (IW) consistently. Known for stunning silvers and smokes.
- Prestige Maine Coons (Oregon): Focuses on huge, rugged cats that fit the Pacific Northwest lifestyle.
- MaineStreet Cats (California): A pillar of the community. Excellent health testing protocols.
The Environmental Challenge: Wildfire Smoke#
I have to add a specific health warning for West Coast owners. Maine Coons have sensitive respiratory systems. They are prone to asthma. Wildfire Season: When the AQI (Air Quality Index) spikes in summer/fall, your Maine Coon is at risk.
- Action: Invest in a HEPA air purifier (like a Blueair or Coway). Keep them strictly indoors during smoke events. If they start coughing, it looks like “hacking a hairball” but produces nothing. Vet immediately.
Scam Alert: The “Teacup” Maine Coon#
California is the land of fad diets and fad pets. I have seen listings in LA for “Teacup Maine Coons” or “Miniature Maine Coons.” There is no such thing. A small Maine Coon is either a runt, sick, or a mix. Do not pay a premium for a “Mini” version of a breed famous for being “Mega.”
Conclusion#
The West Coast offers incredible variety—from high-silver show cats in LA to rugged, thumb-toed hikers in Seattle. Just avoid the “fad” breeders and stick to the TICA/CFA disciplinary lists.
