The Lily Lethality: Plants That Kill Maine Coons Instantly#
We love the “Urban Jungle” aesthetic. But if you own a Maine Coon, your jungle needs to be curated carefully.
Maine Coons are browsers. They walk past a plant and take a bite, just to see what it tastes like.
While many plants (like Pothos or Monstera) cause mouth irritation and drooling, there is one family of plants that is Atomic Bomb toxic: True Lilies.
Easter Lilies, Tiger Lilies, Daylilies, and Stargazer Lilies.
Every part of the plant—the petal, the leaf, the pollen, even the water in the vase—is nephrotoxic. If a cat gets pollen on their fur and licks it off, they can go into acute kidney failure within 24-72 hours.
The “No Lily” Rule#
Do not allow lilies in your house. Period. Even high up. Maine Coons can jump anywhere. If you receive a bouquet with lilies, throw them in the outside trash immediately. It is not worth the risk.
Other Villains#
- Sago Palm: Causes liver failure. Highly toxic.
- Tulips/Daffodils: Bulbs are toxic.
- Aloe Vera: Causes severe vomiting/diarrhea.
The “Safe Jungle”: What You CAN Have#
You don’t have to live plant-free. These are 100% Maine Coon safe:
- Spider Plant: Safe, though cats find them hallucinogenic (like catnip) and will eat them to a nub.
- Calathea (Prayer Plant): Non-toxic and beautiful.
- Boston Fern: Safe and shaggy (tempting to play with, but safe to eat).
- Cat Grass: Grow your own! Wheatgrass or Oat Grass provides a safe outlet for grazing.

- Identify the Plant: Take a photo.
- Call Poison Control: ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435).
- Go to the Vet: If it was a lily, go immediately. They need IV fluids to flush the kidneys before the damage sets in.
Conclusion#
Your home should be a sanctuary, not a minefield. Check every plant before you buy it (the ASPCA app is great for this). And if you really need flowers, buy roses—they are non-toxic, though the thorns might fight back.
