The Cat Backpack Guide: Hiking with a 20lb Cat#
We’ve all seen the cute photos of kittens looking out of “bubble” backpacks. They look adorable.
But if you try to put an adult Maine Coon in a standard bubble backpack, three things will happen:
- They won’t fit.
- They will overheat (plastic bubbles are greenhouses).
- The bottom will sag or break.
I learned this when I tried to take Penelope hiking. She weighed 16lbs. Within a mile, the shoulder straps of the cheap backpack were digging into my skin, and she was panting from the heat.
If you want to adventure with a giant, you need heavy-duty hiking gear, not a novelty toy.
The “Bubble” Trap: Ventilation is Key#
Avoid the full-plastic “astronaut” bubbles. Maine Coons have thick double coats. In a plastic shell, the temperature rises rapidly.
Look for:
- Full Mesh Fronts: Allows air to flow through.
- Side Vents: Essential for cross-breezes.
- Structure: The mesh must be rubberized or reinforced so claws cannot tear it.
Size & Weight Capacity#
Standard bags are rated for 10-12lbs. A male Maine Coon can hit 25lbs. You need a bag rated for Small Dogs (up to 25-30lbs).
- Dimensions: Look for a bag at least 15 inches wide and 17 inches tall. Your cat needs to be able to sit up without hunching and curl up to sleep.
- The “Sag” Test: The bottom of the bag must be rigid. If it sags, it squeezes the cat’s hips.
The 'Fat Cat' Backpack (Travel Cat)
Specifically designed for large breeds. Holds up to 25lbs, features heavy-duty mesh, and has a sternum strap to save your back.

Carrying 20lbs of shifting weight on your back is a workout.
- Sternum Strap: Connects the shoulder straps across your chest. This is vital for stability.
- Waist Belt: Distributes the weight to your hips, saving your shoulders.
If the backpack doesn’t have these straps, you will be miserable after 20 minutes.
Training for the Pack#
Don’t just shove them in and leave.
- Leave the bag open in the living room for a week. Put catnip inside.
- Feed them treats inside the bag.
- Walk around the house with them on your back to get them used to the swaying motion.
Conclusion#
A backpack extends your Maine Coon’s world. It allows them to join you on hikes, vet visits, and coffee runs safely. Just ensure you are buying a piece of luggage engineered for a heavy animal, not a fashion accessory.
