Maine Coon Names: 100+ Ideas for Your Gentle Giant#
Naming a Maine Coon is harder than naming a regular cat. Why? Because “Fluffy” or “Mittens” just doesn’t fit a 20lb animal that looks like a bobcat and acts like a dog.
When I named Atticus, I wanted something distinguished but slightly old-fashioned. When I named Penelope, I wanted something elegant. The name needs to grow with them. A cute name for a 3lb kitten might sound ridiculous for a 25lb beast (unless you go for the ironic route, which I love).
Here is my curated list of names specifically suited for the Maine Coon personality.
The “Size” Names (Mythology & Power)#
These suit the large males perfectly.
- Thor: Needs no explanation.
- Titan: For the biggest of the litter.
- Moose: A classic nod to their size and New England heritage.
- Bear: Because they look like one.
- Goliath: For the record-breakers.
- Atlas: Carrying the weight of the world (or just his own fluff).
The “New England” Roots#
Since they hail from Maine, rugged nature names fit them beautifully.
- Acadia: (After the National Park).
- Birch: For a white or silver cat.
- Maple: Perfect for a Red Tabby.
- River: For the water-obsessed cats.
- Willow: Elegant and flowing.
- Storm: Great for a Blue/Grey or Black Smoke.
The “Irony” Names (My Favorite)#
There is nothing funnier than a giant cat with a tiny name.
- Tiny: The ultimate joke.
- Peanut: Adorable for a 22lb cat.
- Mouse: Confusing and cute.
- Bean: Short and sweet.
- Cupcake: For the toughest looking Black Maine Coon you own.
The “Old Soul” Names (Human Names)#
Maine Coons have very expressive, human-like faces.
- Male: Arthur, Walter, Winston, Silas, Barnaby.
- Female: Eleanor, Mabel, Hazel, Beatrice, Matilda.
Conclusion#
The best way to name them? Live with them for a week. Watch their behavior. Is he a “Tank” or a “Theodore”? Is she a “Xena” or a “Daisy”? Don’t rush it. They will be answering to it for 15 years, so make it good.
